Johnson County

What to Expect

Chesapeake Energy has been active in Johnson County since 2005 and is proud of its relationship with the many mineral owners and residents in the county. With their help and cooperation, Chesapeake has been able to establish itself as the largest producer of natural gas in the country.

To date, nearly 1,200 wells have been drilled in Johnson County, with almost 700 of those wells producing clean, American, abundant and affordable gas at a rate of more than 415,823 mcf/d.

With plans to drill an addtional 700 wells, Chesapeake is pleased to continue working in Johnson County and being an active member of the community.

Maps and Photos

Chesapeake is currently drilling the Quail Hollow 1H, the last drilled of six total wells for Quail Hollow. The pool consists of 384.16 acres located South of US Hwy 67, west of Nolan River Road and north of Surry Place. The Quail Hollow 1H is a great example of urban drilling. To provide minimal interruption to daily life, Chesapeake utilized state-of-the-art sound, light and dust mitigation and worked hard to minimize truck traffic on residential streets.

There are two more proposed high impact wells scheduled to begin drilling during the Summer of 2009. They are the DeAnn 1H and 2H, located south of US Hwy 67, east of Ridgeway, west of Meadowbrook / Featherston and north of Westhill. Chesapeake will utilize state of the art sound, light and dust mitigation techniques at this site, as well.

Chesapeake has successfully worked with Keene city officials and residents on the approval of the Copperhead compressor station. Construction has already begun on this project. Once completed, the Copperhead will be housed in a fully enclosed, state-of-the-art compressor facility.

Safety and Regulation

Chesapeake has safely drilled more than 1,300 wells in the Barnett Shale; 4,775 wells in Texas and 39,200 in the U.S. There have been no reported injuries to any bystander or resident due to any well control incident in the entire state of Texas.

Chesapeake's Barnett Shale drilling operations are tightly regulated by the Railroad Commission of Texas, Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Transportation and others for health, safety and welfare issues.  Chesapeake uses best practices and mitigation measures throughout all drilling and production operations, from mitigating sound to managing water use.

Clean, Abundant, Affordable and American

Unlike coal or oil molecules - which are dense, complex and carbon heavy - natural gas is a light and simple molecule comprised of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms, which results in no particulate and few carbon dioxide emissions. Because of its molecular advantages and its abundance, we believe "carbon-light" nautral gas is the best answer for meeting the nation's and the world's challenge of generating more energy with less pollution. A few other facts about natural gas:

- Natural gas burns 43% cleaner than coal, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions

- Natural gas is abundant, particularly in the Barnett Shale region

- Natural gas is affordable — on a per-gallon equivalent basis, natural gas costs about half as much  as gasoline*

- 97% of the natural gas we consume is produced in North America**
