Riverside 1H
Chesapeake Energy will be flaring the Riverside 1H gas well located on the Riverside Golf Course property at 3000 Riverside Parkway in Grand Prairie.
Flaring is a safe and controlled method for testing the economic viability of natural gas wells and is regulated by the Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC). Chesapeake has applied and been granted permission by the RRC to flare at this location.
Just like a gas grill at your home, the gas comes out of the pipe from the well and is immediately lit to test the quality and quantity of gas produced from that well. Flaring is usually done for 48 hours to five days, depending on the volume of gas produced by the well. Flaring is a standard practice in the oil and gas industry and other industries, such as petrochemical plants and plastic and fertilizer manufacturers, which flare when necessary to safely burn off any accumulation of natural gas during their operations. In addition, garbage dumps and landfills have to flare in order to control the methane gas naturally produced by the decomposition of organic materials.
An estimated flare date could occur on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 or after. It is important to note that the estimated flare date can vary.

Chesapeake has safely drilled more than 1,300 wells in the Barnett Shale; 4,775 wells in Texas and 39,200 in the U.S. There have been no reported injuries to any bystander or resident due to any well control incident in the entire state of Texas.
Chesapeake's Barnett Shale drilling operations are tightly regulated by the Railroad Commission of Texas, Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Transportation and others for health, safety and welfare issues. Chesapeake uses best practices and mitigation measures throughout all drilling and production operations, from mitigating sound to managing water use.

Unlike coal or oil molecules - which are dense, complex and carbon heavy - natural gas is a light and simple molecule comprised of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms, which results in no particulate and few carbon dioxide emissions. Because of its molecular advantages and its abundance, we believe "carbon-light" natural gas is the best answer for meeting the nation's and the world's challenge of generating more energy with less pollution. A few other facts about natural gas:
- Natural gas burns 43% cleaner than coal, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Natural gas is abundant, particularly in the Barnett Shale region
- Natural gas is affordable — on a per-gallon equivalent basis, natural gas costs about half as much as gasoline*
- 97% of the natural gas we consume is produced in North America**
